World Book Day, World Book and Copyright Day, or International Day of the Book, is an annual event organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright around the globe. International Day of the Book is observed each year on April 23. On 23 April 1995, the International Day of the Book was firstly celebrated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Later, a related event in the United Kingdom and Ireland was observed in March.

The official name of World Book Day is World Book and Copyright Day which is celebrated internationally. Moreover, all the United Nations member states observed this day. On the occasion, UNESCO along with the advisory committee from the major sectors of the book industry chose the World Book Capital for that whole year. World Book Day History

In 1922, Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés gave the idea to honor the author Miguel de Cervantes. The first International Day of the Book was celebrated on 7 October 1926, Cervantes’ birthday, since his death date, 23 April 1930. The celebration continued with the exchange of gifts between loved ones since the 1931 Book Fair in Barcelona, where the gifts are a book and a rose.

In 1995, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared April 23rd as the date of World Book Day. Because this is also the death anniversary of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as the birth or death anniversaries of several other prominent authors. So, April 23 is celebrated annually as World Book Day or International Day of the Book to honor the famous authors of the world.

World Book Day Theme

The prime objective behind the celebration of the International Day of the Book is to spread the importance and pleasure of reading. The World Book Day Theme 2022 is “Read, so you never feel low”. The intention is to broaden the reading bandwagon and recognize the scope of books. This year has been marked as World Book Day’s 25th anniversary and the message for all children is “You are a Reader”! The three major sectors of the book industry consist of– publishers, booksellers, and libraries. The main purpose to celebrate World Book and Copyright Day is to promote all three aspects i.e reading, publishing, and copyright. UNESCO along with the advisory councils organize significant events at a large scale to spread awareness regarding Reading, Writing, and Publishing. Schools, colleges, and universities arrange events and gatherings for the International Day of the Book.
