History of World Animal Welfare Day
Heinrich Zimmermann inaugurated First World Animal Day on March 24, 1925, in Berlin, Germany. Over five thousand people accompanied this first event. This activity was organized on October 4 to correlate with the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi. But, due to the unavailability of the platform, the event on that day was shifted to October 4, 1929. Zimmermann struggled for the buildup of World Animal Day. Eventually, in May 1931, at an International Animal Protection Congress in Florence, his proposal was accepted.
And October 4 was approved as a resolution of World Animal Day. In some countries/ cities, world animal day celebrations were started in 1931 and 1948. Since 2002, The Finnish Association of Animal Protection Associations has governed several events during Animal Week and delivered stuff to schools to raise awareness about animal welfare. World Animal Day is evolving as an international event that brought up animal protection activity. On October 27, 2006, the Polish parliament approved a resolution for the authorization of October 4 as Animal Welfare Day.
