Tax Day is the day on which income tax returns are scheduled to be submitted to the federal government. Tax Day has typically tumbled on or just after 15 April since 1913. It was first introduced in 1913 when the Sixteenth Amendment was approved. It is a national holiday observed in the United States each year. It is the due date for national individual income tax returns. The Tax Filing Deadline remains April 15, unless it conflicts with a weekend or any other holiday. Here’s a brief explanation of What is Tax Day, the Tax Filing Deadline, Why do we observe Tax Day each year!

Tax Day History

Federal income tax was first inaugurated with the Revenue Act of 1861. The main objective of the Revenue Act was to help finance the Civil War and thereafter abolished and re-adopted. The early taxes were based on inspections, not instinctive tax recoveries. Federal income tax payment dates fluctuated by the Revenue Act. In 1881, taxed incomes increased by over $4,000 at the ratio of two percent. The legislation was decided by the United States Supreme Court in 1895.

The Supreme Court decided that the Act’s undivided income taxes on bonuses and rents were effectively explicit. The Act was, therefore, not implemented because it disregarded the Constitution’s rule that direct taxes be apportioned among the provinces.

In 1913, the Sixteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified. This Amendment gave the legal authority to the United States Congress to implement income taxes without regard to the apportionment requirement. In 1913, the tax filing deadline for individuals was March 1 (the first year of a federal income tax) and was proceeded to March 15 in 1918. In 1955, it again changed to April 15. Now, the deadline is April 15, unless it conflicts with a weekend or another national holiday.

Tax Filing Deadline

Tax Day

For most Americans, the Tax Filing Deadline is April 18 each year. It isn’t April 15 because of the Emancipation Day vacation in Washington, D.C., and the following weekend. In Maine and Massachusetts, the deadline is April 19 because of the Patriots’ Day holiday. The Tax Filing Deadline is postponed if it interferes with a weekend or public holiday such as Emancipation Day.

Natural disasters or public health emergencies, the COVID-19 pandemic, also postpone Tax Day to prevent the public from such emergencies. Also, state income agencies often delay their Tax Filing Deadlines to remain the same as that of the federal government. The federal government may establish a new deadline for particular states, as it did when Patriots’ Day was interfered with.
