Hair Transplantation Types:

There are two types of hair transplantation:

  • Slit Grafts
  • Micro grafts

Slit Grafts consist of 4 to 10 hair per graft. However, Micro grafts consist of 1 to 2 hairs per graft, depending on the amount of coverage needed.

The Procedure of Hair Transplantation:

Firstly, the surgeon cleans your scalp and numbs an area of your head with the help of a needle with local anesthesia. In this procedure, the surgeon uses one of these two main techniques to achieve follicles for transplantation:

  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) &
  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

In FUT Procedure:

The surgeon will use a scalpel to cut out a strip of scalp skin from the backside of the head. After this, he puts it aside and stitches the scalp closed. This area of the head is instantly covered by the hair around it.  Next, the strip of removed scalp is divided into 500 to 2,000 tiny grafts, each with a separate hair or just a few hairs. The type and strength of graft you get totally depends on your hair quality, type, colour and size of the area where you are transplanting hairs.

In FUE Procedure:

The surgeon and his team will shave the backside of your scalp. After this, the surgeon will start to remove hair follicles one by one from the shaved area. The treated area heals with small dots, which will be covered by your existing hair. After choosing one of these two techniques, the surgeon with his team transplants the hair. After preparing grafts, the surgeon makes holes or slits in the numbed scalp, and delicately places grafts in each hole one by one.

The duration of this process depends on the size of the transplant you’re getting. The duration will be a maximum of 4 to 8 hours. And for hair transplants, you will have to take almost 3 to 4 sessions to get desired results.

Hair Transplantation Results & Recovery:

The treated scalp may become very tender after the surgery. You may need to take the following medications for a few days:

  • Pain Medication
  • Antibiotics to lessen the risk of infection
  • Anti-Inflammatory Medications for keeping Swelling Down

Moreover, the transplanted hair may be started to fall out two to three weeks after the surgery. New hair grows in this way. In most cases, new hair grows 8 to 12 months after surgery. However, many doctors prescribe Minoxidil (Rogaine) or Finasteride (Propecia), the hair growth medications to improve hair regrowth. These medications also prove useful in slowing or stopping future hair loss. But it’s not clear how well these medications work.
