According to the UN food waste index 2021, an average person wastes 74kg of eating items per year. Household eatables waste becomes 61% of total food scraping. Similarly, eating services like restaurants usually dump 32kg of meal per person yearly. This food scraps ratio is just a number for us. But administration authorities face the real problem of degrading the waste. We all know that the burning of scraps is not the solution. Because it’s very unhealthy for the environment and water resources. But thanks to technology, a clothing company came up with a great idea for food dresses.
Are you willing to try the clothes made by eatables? Don’t worry we are not introducing the skirts made by Banana leaves. Rather we are going to tell you about fabric made by polylactic extracts. This kind of polyester is present in fruits, vegetables, and wheat. Let’s dig further to know who and how making this kind of food dresses.
Alt Tex plans to make fabric from food
A Toronto-based company named Alt Tex presented an idea of extracting polyester from eatable scrap. The CEO Myra Arshad came up with that idea and co-founded a company with Avneet Ghotra. Their main focus is not only reducing the waste products in the right way but also recycle them in useful fabric. They have tried various rotten fruits, wheat, and vegetables for this purpose. Specifically, they are using discarded apples for the extraction of durable and cost-effective fabric. After successful experimentation of converting food into the fabric, they want to extend the procedure on an industrial level. Right now CEO Myra Arshad is raising funds for this project. She is contacting various food markets and farmers. The main purpose is to urge them to donate the rotten items instead of dumping them.
How they will create fabric?
Let’s see how Alt Tex is planning to biodegrade the rotten eating products.
- In the first step, Alt Tex will collect the post-industrial food waste through donations from multiple food processors.
- Next, the food will undergo series of chemical processes. The chemical procedures will biodegrade the waste-eating items into bio fiber. The fiber will be more like polyester in texture.
- At last, the company will fit the fiber into a fabric that various companies can use in their apparel. The fabric will be usable for both woven and non-woven clothing textile.
But why food dresses?
The process is not only biodegradable but also nature friendly. Using this procedure industry gets fabric without emitting more greenhouse gases or carbon wastes. Alt Tex is a huge step towards a sustainable and nature-friendly textile industry. The company is currently open for investments, funding, and hiring.
