But have you ever wondered why Muslims make such sacrifices? What is the purpose of the whole event? What is Eid ul Adha history? We’re here to answer all your queries and questions about that!

EidulAdha 2021 date in Pakistan is the 21st of July. However, the Saudi and Americas had celebrated it on the 20th of July. EidulAdha holidays in Pakistan are scheduled from 20th July (Hajj) till the second day of eid i-e: 22nd July.

Eid ul Adha History

According to Islamic Lunar Calendar, Zilhajj is the last (twelfth) month of the year. Eid-ul-Adha takes place on the 10th of Zilhajj. The legitimate moon sighting tells us the accurate date. However, the date becomes clear 10 days prior to the event. Muslims fitting in the specified criteria of Hajj are obliged to go for it, and the next day after Hajj is celebrated as the holy Eid-ul-Adha.

You must be wondering what the sole purpose of this event is. Well, it has got a whole history of our beloved prophet Ibrahim and his sacrifice. An act of obedience and sacrifice that became a ritual. Moreover, The event’s history describes one of the greatest tests of the prophet that led to the righteous path. This was a test, a test of trust, obedience, and love.

Prophet Ibrahim was blessed with a son years later after his marriage. Allah full filled his promise, and the prophet Ismail was born. Soon after the son was able to walk, the time for the test came near. One night Prophet Ibrahim saw a dream in which he was sacrificing his son Ismael. Firstly, he couldn’t figure it out. However, he saw the dream for three consecutive nights, and then he understood that it wasn’t a normal dream. It was Allah’s Holy command. He discussed the dream with his son, to which Prophet Ismael responded:

Oh my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.

The Holy Qur’an 37:102

Both of them then headed towards Mina. Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son is an exceptional example of obedience. This event shows signs of care from Allah towards his people. As soon as the prophet was to sacrifice his son, Allah replaced him with a ram.

And we ransomed him with a great sacrifice. And we left for him [favourable mention] among later generations. Peace be upon Ibraham.

-The Holy Qur’an 37:107

Why is sacrifice significant in Islam?

Do you know what does the word “Sacrifice” means? It is giving up on something beloved for the sake of some other things. The actual concept in Islam is to sacrifice the beloved animal considering Allah’s command. However, the common practice nowadays is that people get the sacrificial animals a day or two before the event. This isn’t how we are described to do.

A sacrificial animal needs care, love, and affection from the master. It is to the point until you start caring about it and love him. When the day of sacrifice approaches, you don’t want it to go away, but it has to because this is the essence of “QURBANI.” Feeding, loving, and caring for your sacrificial animal is a sunnah. Hence, one must follow it.

Now comes the aim of sacrifice. What are its consequences? Well, Islamic traditions are never aimless. They always target something significant and beneficial for the world. Allah doesn’t need the meat or the blood. What he sees is the purity of intentions. The Holy Quran clearly says that,

“It is not their meat, nor their blood, that reaches god. It is their piety that reaches god.”

HOLY QURAN (Surah Al Hajj)

Whatever sacrificial animal is, there are divisions of the meat. One can’t keep the whole of the animal at his own place. One-third of the meat must be given to needy people. At the same time, one-third of meat can be kept at home. On the other hand, the last one-third is for neighbors. That is how division is done. So, in this way, a lot of people who can’t afford good meals of meat can have access to it. Hence, it’s an act of kindness. An act that displays humanity and love.
