Lockdown has caged people all over the globe. In such circumstances, physical activities have decreased a lot. However, the past year shows a surge in eating disorders. Why is that so? Well, women are apprehensive and want to lose the weight gained during the lockdown.
Several online challenges have exacerbated the eating disorders. Such as “wrap your arm around your waist and touch your belly button”, “coin layered collarbone”. Some more hashtags include “square shoulders,” “manga waist”, and “slim legs like a K-pop idol”. The societal pressure has worsened the health life of Gen-Z.
People also think that these bizarre trends might lead to misconceptions about beauty standards and weight. Critics also call it “the new wave of body shaming.” Therefore, it is the primary factor in the promotion of eating disorders
Anorexia Nervosa | the major eating disorder
It won’t be wrong to call Anorexia a psychiatric disorder. It is the condition of losing appetite. Thus, anorexia is both a mental and biological illness. Anorexic women are mostly under societal pressure for a perfect figure. However, the effects can be hazardous.
Lifetime prevalence statistics tell that around 0.4 percent of women will meet the criteria for anorexia during their lifetimes. Yet, according to WHO, approximately 70 million people worldwide suffer from eating disorder.
Constant comparisons and desire of looking perfect can have adverse effects on healthy life. It also leads to mood swings and disordered behaviours. Worsened Anorexia can cause cardiac problems, low blood sugar, anaemia and electrolyte imbalance. The fatal effects can be liver, kidney or even heart failure. So although it seems very easy to cure, it is actually perilous.
Bulimia Nervosa
There is also a condition called Bulimia Nervosa. In this disorder, the patient craves food every time. Therefore, it leads to obesity. The cravings remain constant even in odd times. The continuous episodes of binge eating can lead to extreme health deterioration.
How to prevent eating disorders
It would be best to stop thinking that a specific weight/figure will bring happiness to your life. Mental peace must be maintained to be healthy. Furthermore, intake a balanced diet. Stop categorizing the food as good or bad. Lastly, stop judging yourself based on weight. Live and eat healthy and stay happy.
