It’s the day for the conservation of the Earth’s resources, environment, and living organisms. This day is commemorated throughout the world by rallies, conferences, school projects, public marches, and other activities.
This day reminds us to think about the crisis created by human beings, the threats the planet is facing, and measures to protect the environment. Earth Day is one of the important international days. Spreading public awareness is very crucial to protecting the planet from critical threats. Here is the complete history, objectives, and ways to protect the planet Earth from ongoing threats. So, stay connected with this post till the end to learn the brief information.
Earth Day April 22, 2022
Earth Day 2022 will be observed on Friday, April 22. In 2022, there will be the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day activities are marked by various events around the world.
Earth Day History
In 1969, there was an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California that resulted in environmental damage. After seeing that environment distortion, Nelson started Earth Day. Then he governed a national “teach-in” on college campuses that mainly focused on educating the public about the environment. Later, he convinced Rep. Pete McCloskey to be co-chairman and recruited political activist Denis Hayes as federal coordinator. With a staff of 85 people, they were apt to incite 20 million people across the United States on April 22, 1970.
The team agreed to select April 22 as Earth Day because that’s the break for students from final exams. They thought that would encourage the highest number of students to join the rally. In that Earth Day protest students as well as the media & general public also participated to find ways to maintain the planet. It is estimated that 10% of the United States population participate. In 1980, Nelson wrote in the EPA Journal.
“It was on that day that Americans made it clear that they understood and were deeply concerned over the deterioration of our environment and the mindless dissipation of our resources.”
~Nelson
After 1970, the annual event gained the largest number of people as well as popularity. In 1990, Earth Day was being observed globally, with 200 million people in 141 countries contributing to the event. Recently a 2022 report by the United Nations’ latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stated that “rapid, deep and immediate” lowering of global carbon dioxide emissions is mandatory across each & every domain of society to terminate a climate disaster.

Earth Day Theme
According to EARTHDAY.ORG (a nonprofit organization that organizes & coordinates these events), the theme of Earth Day 2022 is “Invest In Our Planet.” The main objective of this theme is to encourage governments and citizens to adopt ways to save the planet. We should work on how to stop climate change and solve other issues for a sustainable future for the planet Earth.
- People have to work together to save the planet.
- Everyone must commit himself/herself to provide services for environmental maintenance.
- Promotion of public awareness about crucial environmental issues.
- Plant more & more trees for the conservation of the natural environment.
Earth Day Quotes
Susan Clayton, a professor of psychology and environmental studies at The College of Wooster in Ohio, previously reported the importance of celebrating Earth Plant Day. He said:
“Thinking about the history of environmental activism and the way individuals have worked together to change policy can make us more optimistic about the ability to make positive changes in the future.”
~Susan Clayton
Nathaniel Weston, an associate professor of environmental science at Villanova University in Pennsylvania previously explained the simplest ways of celebrating Earth Day. He said:
“There are two simple ways to celebrate Earth Day to make the world a little better. The first is to promote an understanding of important environmental issues so that more people are aware of the critical actions we need to take to protect our environment. The second is to commit yourself to service on or around Earth Day- plant some trees, clean up a stream or help your local community garden.”
~ Nathaniel Weston
Michael Mann, a professor of atmospheric science at Penn State and author of “The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back Our Planet” (PublicAffairs, 2021) stated the importance of planet Earth. He also exemplifies the ways to stabilize the planet, he said:
“We are not yet on the path toward stabilizing the warming of our planet below dangerous levels. Earth Day is an opportunity to have a conversation about what we need to do. Truth be told, every day should be Earth Day. Without a livable planet, we have nothing.”
~Michael Mann
“The environment is where we all meet; where we all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share.”
~Lady Bird Johnson
“To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug.”
~Helen Keller
Earth Day Activities
It’s our responsibility to protect the planet from critical situations. Here are some of the Earth Day activities to help save the planet the whole year. Let’s read out these Earth Protection Ideas.
Be a Waste Warrior
Toilet paper tubes, made from cardboard, take approximately two months to decompose. A plastic bottle can take over 450 years to break down! Alas! How hazardous we humans are to the planet Earth! Instead of throwing these renewable things into the trash bin, we could turn them into awesome flower planters. We can also reuse these items to reduce pollution.
Before throwing something away, think about whether it can be reused or recycled. You can also reduce the waste by limiting the number of things you buy. For example, don’t buy shopping bags, vegetable envelopes, or plastic bags again and again. Just use the envelopes you bought last time or earlier because plastic bags take 400 plus years to decompose.
Limit Water Usage
The most abundant thing in the world is less usable/ drinkable, that is water. It seems like the whole world is being surrounded by Water but the drinkable water is limited. Only one percent of the water on Earth is drinkable or usable by humans, the rest of the water is too salty or impure. DO YOU KNOW? Turning off the tap when you’re brushing your teeth can save up to eight gallons of water per day.
It seems that we are wasting the most abundant but most limited resource of earth knowingly or unknowingly. It can conserve a lot of water if you turn off the tap when you brush your teeth, apply soap to your body while bathing or wash vegetables in a bowl of water instead of under running water. Be sensible, careful, and responsible for your actions. Take steps to save the planet by saving its limited usable water from Now.
Plant Trees
Many researchers estimated that approximately 15 billion trees in the world are being cut down each year. It’s causing deforestation on the planet which leads to environmental imbalances. It is mandatory for governmental infrastructure organizations to take initiatives for tree plantations. You should also do your job to fill up the loss by planting a tree. You may also join local, national, or international organizations to make the Planet Green.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen for animals and humans to breathe. They also provide shelter and food for humans and animals such as squirrels and birds. Tree shades can even reduce the need for air-conditioning in hotter months. Trees are considered the Life Saving creations of God. Forests can reduce soil erosion, floods, and hot seasons as well. So, Go Green, Go Relax!
Spread the Awareness
Share your views and preventive measures to your friends and family members that you want to implement and also ask them to help. Arrange Earth Day festivities or gatherings to connect with people. Connecting with different humans can bring various directions to save the planet. You may invite the people to your place and assign them some significant challenges. Also, check out some other green tips to decrease deforestation.
You can prepare a speech for your school, college, or university festivity regarding Earth Day and Ways to Save Earth. You may also organize a gathering or party to spread awareness about environmental maintenance. There are many governments and non-governmental organizations which organize large-scale gatherings and events to spread messages about environmental crises and ways to protect the planet. The more people do, the better our planet will be!
